10-Step checklist to create engaging video content
If you think video isn’t important as a marketing tool, think again. These days professional video content is essential for any business.
Gone are the days when video can be seen as a luxury or an add-on. Not leveraging the power of video may well mean you’re missing the multiple touch points consumers are expecting of businesses today.
65% of the population is made up of visual learners. This means that it’s important to present content visually, and whether you’re placing it on your blog or website, distributing it via social media or sending it through email, video is a great way to make your content visual and entertaining.
So now you may be thinking that producing some video content for your business might be a good idea. But where do you start? There are many parts that go into making great video content.
Here’s PURE’s 10 step checklist to ensure your video content engages your audience to drive the results you require.
1. Know your audience...
The most compelling videos will evoke an emotion within your audience and speak directly to them. To achieve this you need to be able to describe your audience in detail such as age, likes, dislikes, etc and to know the trigger words that will capture their attention.
2. The 10 second rule...
We have become masters of the ‘click’. If a piece of content doesn’t grab our attention within the first few seconds we click away.
When planning your video it’s crucial to keep this in mind. Your video needs to grab their attention within the first 10 seconds to keep them watching.
3. Entertain, Inform, Educate...
If your video can provide one, two or maybe even all three of these values your video will be well on its way to being a success!
4. The Power of Storytelling....
There’s no better way engage your audience than to tell them a story. We love a good story! To put your content and message into context within a story will lead to certain engagement. And if it’s real –
even better!
5. Video quality...
Would you let a 5-year-old child design your brand and logo? NO! The same applies for video.
The standard and quality of your video goes along way in your audience’s perception of your company and brand. Give video content the same considerations you would for any advertising media you release. This applies to both external and internal content.
6. The grand epic....
People don’t have the attention span to watch long videos. If you can’t communicate your message within 30 – 90 seconds try a different approach. Anything longer than that and people will tune out, unless you’ve done something really, really special.
7. Pair production style with content...
The biggest key is creating a video that people will want to talk about is by presenting it in an interesting way. The production approach and style you choose must be a key consideration.
A production company will offer valuable input in selecting a style of production that fits your audience, topic and content available.
8. Ongoing content...
We love to consume video. So once you have produced your video content make sure you have a good plan for what is next. Keep your audience fed and you’ll keep them coming back!
9. Have a budget in mind...
Video comes in all shapes and sizes and a variety of costs. By selecting a budget you’re comfortable with at the start you’ll give the production company a framework to build from. This will allow you to get the most value from your investment.
10. Call To Action
Don’t forget what the video is there to do. Firstly to drive viewers to your business and/or product and secondly to make sure the viewer is left knowing what the next step is for them.
Not every video will have a call to action but if it does it needs to be clear and concise.
